I've home colored my hair for over 30 yrs. Now my roots seem to indicate that I'm very grey. That seems to be "in" now so what is the safest, easiest way to go grey. I don't want to just let it grow out--grey roots and auburn ends, UGH!!

I was in your position and just kept going a shade lighter until it was so light the roots didn't show when coming through. Also I kept it trimmed regularly to cut off the darker ends. It's so much easier now that I don't colour it. Another bonus is I am now able to wear colours I wouldn't have consider before. Anything goes with white hair.

I've been dying my hair for about ten years, when I decided to finally go back to being natural, I dyed it to a close color to the roots (in your instances you might not want to do this), and then I got a hair cut. I had very long hair and cut it very short, this way it cut off the dead ends, and excess weight brought on by dying, and made the hair healthier and grow in faster. This seems to be the most efficient way for me.

The easiest is to use none permanent colour wash until your hair grows out

I think there are a few box dye kits for gray hair but it could be extremely tricky going gray from auburn. I'd recommend seeing a stylist. Trying to do that at home would definitely *not* be the easiest way.
You can always call one and ask if they would be able to do it for you. A phone call doesn't cost anything at all. :-) It will probably cost $60-$100, but on the bright side... you'll only have to do it once!
Good luck!

There are products at beauty stores (like Sallys) where you can get a hair stripping products that take all the color out. I think for some of them you need to be a hair stylist and prove that you work for a salon (which stinks) but I think theres a few any customer can buy.
Its easy to use but just remember that taking color out of your hair is always very harsh so just make sure to do a few deep conditioning treatments afterwards.

I agree with resignedtolife's solution, a bonus is that people who know you are less likely to notice a sudden difference if you take it slowly

Yeah - grey/grey equals wisdom - you don't see Nelson Mandela or Bill Clinton wearing no hair dye.
Best way to get back to a normal silver top is to stop putting dye on your hair and let it just grow out naturally. Eventually after a few hair cuts it will look okay.
Remember, once you allow your natural glorious silver hair to show you are automatically a member of the Grey Panthers in America. Here in UK you are just old, like me, but there are 12 million of us, join the Union today.
Power to the people - the old people that is.

if it was me , i would do it gradually...by having a good cut and some highlights or lowlights . that way, the regrowth is not so obvious.

Womyn power! Grey hair is sexy and shows pure confidence. I've always wondered why women feel the need to hide it so often. What I did after dying my hair for years, was I let the roots grow out about 3 inches then I had an awesome short haircut that was pretty whacky - kind of semi-bob and one side had a longer strand... I wish I could post a picture of it - looked funky and fantastic. You'll have some of your "old" dyed colour on the longer strands but it will look fine for a few months, then you can chop that off and grow it out long or whatever you decide.
