Why do we get grey and white hair? I got mine in my early 20's?

Prematurely graying hair is genetic. Blame it on your parents and grandparents. On men it's great, on me it's cause for alarm and frequent trips to the hair colorist.

Maybe that's somewhat hereditary.

Yea. Me too. Kinda sucks, but I guess It doesn't bother me too much.

LOL...you're lucky! I started with white hair when I was 17. Now it's invading more and more of my once beautiful brown hair!

And to answer your question...I have no idea! Friends? Family? Spouse? Children? All of the above?

Pigment-producing cells add colour to our hair as it grows. As we age the pigment-producing cells slowly die off and individual hairs appear white. When mixed in with strands of hair that still have their original colour, hair looks grey.

We can go grey whatever colour hair we have, however grey hairs tend to be much more noticeable in darker hair as darker hair has more pigment than lighter hair.

Most people begin to notice that they have grey hair by the time they turn 40, although grey hairs can appear when people are in the teens or twenties.

A study in 1996 showed that smokers are more likely to go grey prematurely than non-smokers. Werner syndrome (a rare disorder where sufferers age prematurely) and pernicious anaemia (a type of autoimmune anaemia) can also cause premature greying.

I always thought it had something to do with my wife's constant nagging.

Yes, it's hereditary. I got my grey hair when I was around 30. So I started dyeing it - trying to get my natural color which was reddish brown.

Whatever the reason, we just got to cope with it and not be a dope about it - no soap, radio.

AGE and/or GENES

Older people tend to develop grey hair because the pigment in the hair is lost and the hair becomes colorless. Grey hair is considered to be a characteristic of normal aging. The age at which this occurs varies from person to person, but in general nearly everyone 75 years or older has grey hair, and in general men tend to become grey at younger ages than women.

It should be noted however, that grey hair in itself is not actually grey; the grey head of hair is a result of a combination of the dark and white/colorless hair forming an overall 'grey' appearance to the observer. As such, people starting out with very pale blond hair usually develop white hair instead of grey hair when aging. Red hair usually doesn't turn grey with age; rather it becomes a sandy color and afterward turns white. In fact, the gray or white appearance of individual hair fibers is a result of light scattering from air bubbles in the central medula of the hair fiber. Some degree of scalp hair loss or thinning generally accompanies aging in both males and females, and it's estimated that half of all men are affected by male pattern baldness by the time they are 50[3]. The tendency toward baldness is a trait shared by a number of other primate species, and is thought to have evolutionary roots.

Have you ever watched someone try to cover up gray hair by dyeing it? Or maybe you wonder why your granddad has a full head of silver hair when in old pictures it used to be dark brown? Getting gray, silver, or white hair is a natural part of growing older, and here's why.

Each hair on our heads is made up of two parts:

a shaft - the colored part we see growing out of our heads

a root - the bottom part, which keeps the hair anchored under the scalp

The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by a tube of tissue under the skin that is called the hair follicle (say: fah-lih-kul). Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin (say: meh-luh-nin) that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, red, and anything in between.

Melanin is the same stuff that makes our skin's color fair or darker. It also helps determine whether a person will burn or tan in the sun. The dark or light color of someone's hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color - like gray, silver, or white - as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray.

People can get gray hair at any age. Some people go gray at a young age - as early as when they are in high school or college - whereas others may be in their 30s or 40s before they see that first gray hair. How early we get gray hair is determined by our genes. This means that most of us will start having gray hairs around the same age that our parents or grandparents first did.

Gray hair is more noticeable in people with darker hair because it stands out, but people with naturally lighter hair are just as likely to go gray. From the time a person notices a few gray hairs, it may take more than 10 years for all of that person's hair to turn gray.

Some people think that a big shock or trauma can turn a person's hair white or gray overnight, but scientists don't really believe that this happens. Just in case, try not to freak out your parents too much. You don't want to be blamed for any of their gray hairs!

Scientifically, I agree with Astroeyes.

I suspect this is a side way you are trying to convince us that those grey hair we see on you in the avatar are because now you are in your late 20's !!

me too but I discovered Loreal soon after. I think it's heredity and loss of pigment due to age
